US President Donald Trump is set to assign his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, to lead Washington’s efforts to address concerns over Iran, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The report suggested that Witkoff’s appointment signals Trump’s willingness to explore diplomacy with Tehran before escalating pressure. Witkoff, a real estate investor instrumental in brokering the Gaza ceasefire, is expected to focus on Iran’s nuclear program as part of Trump’s broader strategy to “stop the wars” in the region.

Trump and his advisors have indicated in early discussions that they aim to keep diplomatic channels open to avoid a larger confrontation with Iran, the FT said. Some Trump officials have reportedly informed diplomats and colleagues that Witkoff will lead efforts to determine whether a diplomatic solution is achievable.

The report added that Trump’s approach to Iran, along with Witkoff’s mandate, is still evolving. Recent appointments to Trump’s foreign policy team reflect differing views on Iran. While some, like Pentagon Middle East chief Michael DiMino and under-secretary of defense nominee Elbridge Colby, advocate caution and restraint, others, including national security advisor Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have taken a more hawkish stance.

Witkoff’s role has raised concerns among Iran hawks in Congress and elsewhere in Washington, according to the FT. Critics fear he may weaken pressure on Iran in pursuit of a deal.

“He’s already lifting pressure on Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, and in the process abandoning American hostages and endangering Israel,” a senior Republican Congressional staffer told the FT. “He keeps saying he knows what Trump wants, but he doesn’t understand what Trump believes.”
