Senior Yemeni official runs a wide smuggling network for the Houthis: Sources
A senior security official in the internationally recognized Yemeni government runs a wide smuggling network that operates under the cover of the law, for the benefit of the Iran-backed Houthis.
Colonel Aref Ahmed Hasan Dhab'aan, Deputy Director of Criminal Investigation Department in Mahra Governorate, southeast Yemen, runs a wide smuggling network, exploiting his position to facilitate the smuggling of weapons and contraband for the Houthis. Security sources told Yemen Details, on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.
Colonel Dhab'aan, who is considered one of the prominent arms of Sheikh Ali Al-Harezi known for his involvement in smuggling activities, has been involved in dozens of smuggling operations on behalf of the Houthi militia to secure their logistical needs through border and sea ports. The sources said.
According to documents obtained by Yemen Details, Colonel Dhab'aan uses his official position as a cover to carry out smuggling operations. He runs his operations in a meticulous manner that makes it difficult to detect or legally prosecute, relying on procedures that appear to be legal.
"There is direct coordination between Dhab'aan and prominent Houthi leaders in Sanaa, which makes him one of the militia's trusted assets in carrying out logistical tasks". The sources revealed.
The tasks of the network run by the Colonel Dhab'aan include smuggling weapons and contraband through the "Shahn" land port, in addition to using the sea coasts in Mahrah as alternative smuggling routes.
He also works on buying loyalties within the security and police staff by offering financial amounts to some soldiers and employees in the Mahra Police, which facilitates the passage of deals without obstacles.
According to the sources, the Houthis rely on the Colonel to secure their operations in Mahra, providing him with generous financial support to ensure the success of the operations.
Observers called on the Yemeni government to intensify control over border crossings and coasts to block any smuggling attempts that serve the Houthis.
